Free Software Demo: Camfrog Video Chat

January 31st, 2008

Wish that you could take your instant messaging to the next level with easy to use video chat? Wish that you could talk with colleagues with audio and video or easily set up a video conference with up to 1000 guests?

With fast video transfer over broadband, Camfrog Video Chat makes that possible.

An editor’s review showcases the benefits and drawbacks of the program:

If you’re sick of hopping from one chatware program to another, looking for the perfect mix of video, audio, and text socializing, CamFrog might be what you’re looking for.

The chat rooms feature everything from music lessons to sign language to non-English chatting, and integrating video, audio, and text components are a great leap forward for chat communities since a Webcam is not a requirement. Be warned, though: There’s also a slew of X-rated chat rooms–this is not a program that kids should use without supervision.

Free Software Demo: PC Backup from Migo Software

January 30th, 2008

PC Backup from Migo SoftwareAdmit it: you know that you should be backing up your PC on a regular basis. Most people do know that they should; but is seems as though very few of them actively follow through with the backup process - especially on any sort of a regular basis.

There’s always a justification for them: it takes too long, it’ll take too much time or effort, they don’t know how. But really, these justifications all become excuses (and not very good ones) when you have the right tools. That is to say, you can set all of the justifications you have ever used aside when you have PC Backup from Migo Software.

With PC Backup, it’s easy to backup all of your data to the location of your choice. It’s also easy to specify which files you’ll backup, to set the program to only backup files that have changed within a set amount of time (say, a week). Only want to back up your MP3s and photos? Okay. Want to focus on backing up the files and programs that you use for work? That’s possible to. Want to backup everything before upgrading to a new operating system? With PC Backup you’ll be able to.

Free Software Demo: Flash Card Manager

January 29th, 2008

Flash Card Manager is a handy piece of software that’s great for students of all ages.

It used to be that kids learned to solve basic math problems by using flashcards: the “problem” was printed on one side, the “solution” was on the other. Similarly, little kids used to learn spelling from flash cards; on one side would be a cartoon dog, on the back would be the word. Older students used flash cards when it came time to learn a foreign language, but they had to go through the process of writing out the words and definitions themselves.

Flash Card Manager simplifies the process, allowing users to create 2-sided flashcards with ease. According to the publisher:

Create and review your own set of flash cards. Easiest to Use - Works just like a stack of 3×5 index cards. Most Efficient Learning Method - Automatically schedules flash cards for review based on the latest memory and learning research. Fun - The automatic review scheduling system keeps you focused on the flash cards you need to practice, not the flash cards you already know.

Think it might help you with your studies? Click here to download a free software demo of Flash Card Manager.

Free Software Review: Revo Uninstaller

January 26th, 2008

You know those apps that you have on your PC that, from the moment you installed them you knew you were never going to use again? Revo Uninstaller is a better way of getting rid of them.

Rather than having to wait for the Windows Install/Uninstall process to go through each one to get rid of the program and then having to search for files associated with the program on your own, the Revo Uninstaller scans your computer before and after you delete an application, making sure that every trace of it is gone.

According to reviews:

Revo also provides some powerful tools. Advanced mode adds program-specific Registry key access to the context menu. The Tools Optimizer holds the Autorun Manager, Windows Tools access screen, and a Junk File finder/killer. The Autorun Manager provides one-stop shopping for startup tweaking. Windows Tools pulls together various and disparate basic utilities under one umbrella, and the Junk killer is just killer.

The Tools Tracks Cleaner accesses cache-cleaning features, include standard browser cache functions as well as crash memory dump files, MS Office cleaners, system-wide and program-specific search histories, and more. Another cool function is the Hunter, which offers click-and-drag uninstall and process-killing functionality. Revo and the way that it will revolutionize your uninstall workflow is hard to pass up.

Why settle for lackluster results when you delete an application? Click here to download the Revo Uninstaller.

Free Software Demo: Recover Lost Data

January 24th, 2008

Recover Lost DataIt’s okay - it happens to all of us. You tried to delete a file and didn’t realize that you had dragged something else to the trash; of course, it wasn’t until you were looking for that file (after emptying the recycle bin) that you realized it. If you had Recover Lost Data from Migo Software, you wouldn’t have to panic and frantically search for the lost file; you’d just need to run a simple program.

Recover Lost Data makes it easy to recover those files that you thought were gone forever - whether you’re looking for photos, music files, spreadsheets, presentations, documents or drawings. You’ll be able to run the program, scan multiple locations where the data is likely to be stored and track down the deleted file (provided it has not been written over). The best part though is that you’ll find it’s not just your hard drive that you can scan - flash drives, memory cards, external drives: Recover Lost Data lets you search them all.

Better yet, if there are multiple similar files that are found while the software searches, you’ll be able to take advantage of preview windows so that you can be sure the file you recover is the one you were looking for. If you’ve ever lost an important file, you’ll already have a feel for how valuable a tool like this is. Why not discover for yourself how much it can do for you?

Free Software NoteTab Light

January 23rd, 2008

Note Tab Light

Web editors are always looking for a quick and easy way to make changes throughout a site. Maybe it’s that there’s a sudden realization that US measurements are confusing to those who are looking from outside of the US; with NoteTab Light, all of those conversions can be made with just a few clicks of the mouse. Use multiple tabs to process documents all at once rather than opening a separate notepad file for each document.

Mostly, however, NoteTab Light aims to simplify the process of editing, inserting code, replacing text and even of uploading edited files:

(source)The left column displays a list of commands, called Clips, that do anything from inserting bits of text to generating code. Each library, the roster of which appears as tabs at the bottom of the screen, contains its own set of clips. The FTP library, for example, lets you create server profiles, connect, upload and download files, and issue various commands. The HTML library auto-completes HTML tags. The publisher’s site offers many user-created libraries, or you can make your own. You can create your own clips by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2.

While some users site the challenges posed by a lack of spellcheck in NoteTab Light, most also praise the editor. Not sure if it’s right for you? Click here to download a free copy to put to the test.

Surfing the web is one thing. However, using that tool on a computer that isn’t your own - well, there’s always a bit of a risk involved in that.
