Never Lose a File Again - Recover Lost Documents

Recover Lost Data is the only hard drive data recovery software you will ever need. Recover files that have been deleted and lost from the Windows Recycle Bin, a virus infection, an unexpected system shutdown, or a software failure. Get Recover Lost Data and never have to worry about your data being lost again.

When a file is deleted from a Windows Operating System, the contents of the file are rarely destroyed. If the Windows reference information remains intact, Recover Lost Data reconstructs the link to the deleted file which enables data recovery.

Using the wrong data recovery tool can actually cause damage and reduce your chances of success. Rely on Recover Lost Data to make it safe and easy. It combines powerful technology with intuitive features to rescue data from your drives or devices that other products miss.

British Bank fined $2 million for laptop theft

February 14th, 2007

A British bank, The Nationwide, has been fined by the financial regulators for failing to ensure customers’ bank information was not secured on laptop that was stolen.

Now that strikes me as one very expensive piece of hardware !

The Nationwide claimed no banking information was at risk but the regulator did not agree and fined them almost $2 million.

Portable Vault and Digital Vault would have encrypted the confidential information using strong 256 bit Blowfish encryption and password protected the files so that only the password keeper would have been able to access that customer information and at $14.99 that sounds like a far better deal than $2 million !

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

February 12th, 2007

I came across this little free tool from Microsoft to guide you through the upgrade path with the new release of Windows Vista.

The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor will help you to determine if your Windows XP-based PC can run Windows Vista. You can also use the Upgrade Advisor to determine if your Windows Vista-based PC is ready for an upgrade to a more powerful edition of Windows Vista.

This small software tool will scan your computer and create an easy-to-understand report of all known system, device, and program compatibility issues, and recommend ways to resolve them. Upgrade Advisor can also help you to choose the edition of Windows Vista that best fits the way you want to use your computer.

Stompsoft also provides a 3-in-1 solution performing the actual upgrade and transfer of existing preferences, email, settings, files and data to the new Vista OS or to a new Vista ready PC with XP to Vista Easy-Sync Suite. It contains XP to Vista transfer software together with a high speed ethernet cable if you are moving to a new PC as well as Stompsoft’s DriveWasher for permanently and securely removing all your confidential data from the old PC or laptop.

Vista Bumps - USA Today

February 9th, 2007

Vista has been in users hands for about a week now and the Mac-v-PC debate has if anything, been fuelled by the launch of the new Windows OS. I came across an interesting piece in USA Today and below is an extract from the article and how one user spent 6 hours performing the install and ended up wishing he’s bought a Mac….someone should have told him that Stompsoft’s XP to Vista Easy-Sync Suite could have performed all of this in a matter of moments not hours !

Activation trouble

For those who are making the move to Vista, one trouble area has been properly activating the new operating system. Cartoonist Mike Cope spent hours trying to get his Windows 2000-based system to move to Vista. Initially, he tried to upgrade from within Windows 2000, but that didn’t work. Next, the Stoney Creek, Ontario, resident tried to do a clean installation of the software on his PC. The software installed fine, but when time came to do the product activation — a mandatory step with Vista — the process failed.

After reinstalling Windows 2000 and trying a few more things, Cope eventually found a loophole that solved his problem — installing Vista without activating it and then installing it a second time and going through the activation process. Because the software assumed he was moving from Vista to Vista, it activated successfully.

Still, Cope wasn’t happy with the more than six hours he spent getting to Vista. “I should’ve bought a Mac.” Cope said.

Vista Upgrade Paths from Previous Versions

February 8th, 2007

How can you upgrade to Vista and what do you need

For many of you, the Windows Vista experience will begin with the purchase of a new PC. For others, the experience begins by upgrading your current PC, and it’s important to understand your upgrade options. Your choices depend on the version of Windows that is currently running on your PC and the type of computer hardware you have to run certain features. Here’s how you can start planning for an upgrade to Windows Vista.

The options

You can upgrade from your current edition of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 to a corresponding or better edition of Windows Vista by purchasing and installing an upgrade copy of Windows Vista. If you’re upgrading multiple PCs in a household, you can save time and money with the Windows Vista Family Discount.

Microsoft have a user-friendly matrix that will show you what your options are for upgrade.

Mythical Vista

February 7th, 2007

I picked this up from a tech blog a few minutes ago and it spells out what my feelings are:

“Most old applications and peripherals won’t work with Vista” Most probably will, but some software and peripherals are still incompatible. My particular HP Laserjet printer doesn’t have Vista drivers available yet; though I hope drivers will be provided, as the article says, over the next few months. I was unable to use the Direct2Drive patcher to upgrade Oblivion. And Neverwinter Nights 2 runs slow in Vista even on good hardware.”

I’ve run my Vista upgrade, and I’ve been holding hands with friends and family as well (the curse of being somehow perceived to be part of the technical cognescenti) and the bottom line for anyone looking to perform this Windows upgrade and especially if you’re a novice - use Stompsoft’s XP to Vista Easy-Sync Suite !
